A.K.A. "Fat Dog"
and even "Boo Boo Bear"

On January 22, 1999 I made a trip to the Az. Humane Society to see if I could find a dog to bring home.  Blu was in a cage with a red heeler that was jumping all over the place.  He just sat there looking at me like “Please get me out of here.”  I did just that and he joined our family on that day.  Blu is one of the best Queenslands I have ever come across.

Unfortunately, 3 months later Blu ended up with a broken hind leg. He was outside while the kids were playing and although we don’t know for sure, we figure he was hit by a car.  The vets were surprised though that a broken leg was all that happened.  Usually, they also end up with broken ribs and collapsed lungs.  The leg was savable but it wouldn’t be cheap.  My conscience wouldn’t allow me to just have it amputated.  Although many people thought I was crazy to spend that kind of money, I had to do whatever I could to fix his leg.  We went to the wonderful Dr. Favor, DVM at Animal Health Services.  He wanted to try placing a bar with pins to heal the break and enlisted the help of a specialist M.J. Soderstrom, DVM from Sonora Veterinary Specialists.  They worked very diligently to align the break perfectly during hours of surgery.   After about two months it was apparent that the break wasn’t going to heal.  The next option was to do a bone graft and screw a metal plate on the bone.  Dr. Soderstrom explained it all to me and he stated “We all love Blu.  He is a great dog.  We want to see him walk out of here one way or another.”  Before I could say anything, he ended by saying, “I know you are a single mom and are doing everything you can for Blu…….if you can pay for the plate we will take care of everything else.”  It was very overwhelming.  They always made comments of how wonderful Blu was and how mellow he was for a Queensland. These were truly caring people. Blu had the surgery and that was all it took for his leg to heal. He has a very slight limp and a scar on his leg but it doesn’t slow him down. He is 9 years old and we love every day we have with him. He does a few tricks, closes the front door and can even open his cage door. We did pay a pretty penny for the first surgery but every time I see him running and playing with the kids, I am glad we did it.
